Getting Started
Cadet Membership
- Visitors are always welcome at Squadron 3 meetings.
- Prospective members are asked to attend a minimum of three meetings before applying for membership, one of which must be attended by one or both parents.
- When a cadet joins Civil Air Patrol, our National Headquarters will send a binder with specifics on the uniforms, regulations, aerospace modules and more. Cadets are required to bring this binder to each weekly meeting. Parents are encouraged to review the contents of this binder with their son or daughter.
- The Squadron 3 website is: www.sq3.org (you are here!)
- California Wing Cadet Programs website: www.cawgcadets.org.
Most local and statewide activities are listed here).
- All activities (outside regular meetings) require a CAWG Form 150 filled out for that specific activity. The Form 150 is a permission slip with emergency contact info for your cadet. If you are both attending, you both need to submit a Form 150.
- The Squadron 3 "Yahoo Group": http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Sq3
- Specific uniforms are worn each Wednesday throughout the month:
- 1st Wednesday of each month: PT (see below)
- 2nd Wednesday of each month: Blues
- 3rd - 5th Wednesdays: BDUs.
eServices
- Civil Air Patrol eServices is the online resource for CAP members. Here a member may view their membership status, renew, correct or change their address, and enroll in the many training programs offered through CAP and sister organizations. For first-time users, go to www.capnhq.gov and click on the area for new users. You will be asked identifying information, including your CAP ID number (it is the six-digit number that appears on your membership card).
- Once National Headqurters emails a temporary password, a new password (of your own choosing) must be selected. You will be transferred immediately into OPSEC (Operational Security) training. The OPSEC NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) is required by all Civil Air Patrol members. After reviewing the program, affirm your agreement, and you will be redirected to eServices main page (it may take 24-hours for the OPSEC NDA to be registered and to be allowed to use eServices).
Notes on Uniforms
PT (Physical Training)
- Navy Blue Shorts
- Squadron T-shirt (or plain black crew-neck T-Shirt)
- Gym shoes and white socks
Dress Blues
If the Air Force budget allows, a dress blue uniform is included with cadet membership. Log-in to eServices,
click on "Cadet Uniforms" and enter the cadet's sizes. You may want to order one size larger, as uniforms generally
run small (or tapered) and it may take several weeks for delivery. It includes:
- A flight cap (hat)
- 1 button-down shirt
- 1 pair of pants
(pants or skirts are available for females - we recommend pants as they are more appropriate for certain activities)
- 1 Belt
and belt buckle
- NOT included, but required: plain black dress shoes and socks.
We bly recommend against the purchase of "Corfam" (a high-gloss plastic) or similiar shoes for cadets.
Although they have a brilliant shine, the plastic surface does not breathe -- which make hot-weather comfort and sanitation
difficult; plus, all scuffs are permanent.
The uniforms obtained through this program remain property of the USAF and must be returned to the squadron if
membership ends.
BDUs (Battle Dress Uniforms)
Please note that "digitals" or the new ABU's (Airman Battle Uniforms) are currently NOT authorized.
- BDU Blouse (called a “shirt” by the civilian world) - Summer weight.
- BDU Pants - Summer weight
- Black boot socks (may have white bottoms)
- Black military utility boots - must be able to accept a polished shine
- Black baseball cap w/ large white
“3”. This can be obtained from the squadron.
- Blousing bands - for the pant legs
- The total cost for one uniform could be as low as about $80.00, depending on the quality of boots chosen and other
similar variables.
- Patches for the blouse. These can be obtained from the Squadron. Specific measurements for the correct
placement of all patches on the blouse are in your CAP manuals.
- Flag flying backwards goes on the right shoulder of the blouse one inch down from the shoulder/sleeve seam. The
stars are forward and stripes stream back.
- California Wing patch goes on the left shoulder, centered on the seam, 1" down from the shoulder/sleeve seam.
- "Name tape” needs to be ordered, but the Civil Air Patrol tape may be obtained from the squadron. These
tapes are placed immediately above the front pockets of the blouse.
- Squadron patch -- available from the squadron -- is placed centered on the right breast pocket, below the pocket
flap.
